STAR WARS EPVII ROUND-UP: First filming location? A possible hint at the lead character? Will we see this in 2015?

Well, we now have a director in the shape of JJ Abrams in place for Star Wars Episode VII – still can’t believe I’m writing that – but is this now the first location?

According to the Daily Mail, filming is set to kick off on the new trilogy in, em, Kent. Yes, apparently a quarry beside the Bluewater Shopping Centre (below) will be the surface of an alien planet when we see it onscreen in 2015.

In other Star Wars news, aintitcool are reporting that Matthew Vaughn, the X-Men: First Class director that everyone was, let’s be honest, convinced had the gig until last Thursday, was pretty close to sealing the deal with Lucasfilm/Disney and part of the agreement was that Chloe Moretz – Hit Girl in Kick-Ass – would be the lead character.

How would Star Wars fans react to a female lead? Well, since this is the universe of Princess Leia, Padme, Ashoka, Ventress, Mara Jade, Aurra Sing and many more, we reckon this would be ok. But… it still leaves us wondering who she would be. Our money? Jaina Solo, jedi daughter of Han and Leia.

Don’t quote us, but if the rumours of Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and maybe Billy Dee Williams returning are true, then we’re going to guess this will leave the story open for new characters, so why not turn to stories already established in years of comics and books?

Or we could be wrong.

Finally, there is speculation online that JJ Abrams, who got Star Trek: Into Darkness pushed back, isn’t happy with having to get Episode VII out in 2015 and would be happier with 2016. To quote Homer Simpson, ‘I want it now!’

Seriously though, if Abrams feels it’s a rush then we’re rather hold out, we want a perfect return to the galaxy far, far away, let’s not rush it… we’ve already waited this long.

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
