Brent Spiner: “Another Star Trek series is inevitable”

October 7th, 2014 by Irwin Fletcher 2 Comments

Brent Spiner – who fought tooth and nail for another Generation movie after Nemesis in 2002 – reckons that Star Trek is destined to return to American Television, comparing it to Doctor Who. Spiner played the pale-skinned android Data in the long-lived Television show, Star Trek: The Next Generation, which consequently went on to spawn four cinematic adventures.

“I think there’s no question that there will be another Star Trek television series,” he said at the Destination Star Trek convention in London.

“It’s going to happen. I’m sure of it.”

The last time Star Trek has been on the small screen was during the Star Trek: Enterprise run, which was pretty short-lived and was cancelled in 2005. The franchise has since been successfully rebooted to attract a wider audience. The new films consist of younger stars portraying older characters such as Chris Pine playing a younger Captain Kirk and Simon Pegg playing a younger Scotty. The third film – which is being directed by JJ Abrams – is expected to receive a release date in 2016, and Spiner expects that it will go back to the small screen after the third installment.

Spiner pitched in: “I think there was some kind of arrangement made that there would be no more series while these three films were being made. And after that I’m pretty sure that Paramount will do another Star Trek series for television. Why wouldn’t they?”

Spiner also likened Star Trek to Britain’s own long-running Sci-Fi series: “It’s our Doctor Who in a way. It was Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary last year, and 2016 will be the 50th anniversary of Star Trek. I think just like Doctor Who, Star Trek will go on forever. It’s the great American epic, embraced worldwide.”

Asked who would replace him in the role of the android Data if there was a reboot he replied with: “Tilda Swinton,”

We loved Brent Spiner’s Data here at FTN, so it would be nice to see him turning up again on our TV screens at some point. Wonders never cease eh?
