Well, we’ve all been speculating for the better part of a month what new show Joss Whedon would be when it was announced the writer/director had signed an exclusive TV and movie deal with the mouse house, and according to a Deadline Hollywood report, it’s a show about SHIELD.
SHIELD, or the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division is the police and spy division in the Marvel Universe. The unit had a big role in the Marvel movies and a show about the force just makes sense for TV. I’m thinking we may see a villain of the week format here combined with an over reaching season story arc.
The new show will be penned by Whedon along with his brother Jed and Maurissa Tancharoen who collaborated with Whedon on shows like Dollhouse. The threesome will executive produce alongside Marvel’s Jeph Loeb and Jeffery Bell. Joss Whedon is set to direct the pilot schedule permitting of course and the show is reported to be going into production immediately.
I for one am excited to see a show about SHIELD on the small screen. Normally I wince and get a tiny headache at the thought of a new cop show, but this is different. This is Marvel. One can only hope that stars from Marvel’s movie universe will make appearances. One cannot have a show about SHIELD without Nick Fury showing up so it almost goes without saying that Samuel Jackson will appear at some point. Of course David Hasselhoff would probably be willing to dust off his eye patch and fill in.
