The 31 year old actor, who has played the role which catapulted him into superstardom since New Years Day 2010, has released a short video thanking the Doctor Who fans for their continued support during his tenure as the time lord.
Smith shot the video on a Detroit street in the early hours of the morning, after finishing a night shoot for the upcoming Ryan Gosling movie How to Catch A Monster. Holding up a stack of A4 paper, he reveals handwritten messages detailing his gratitude to the fans, to his co-stars Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill and Jenna Louise Coleman, and to head writer and showrunner Steven Moffat.
For me, Smith was an ideal casting choice for the role. Even if the storylines he was given as the 11th Doctor sometimes felt flat and uninteresting, he still managed to be the best thing about the series. Whoever follows him will have pretty big shoes to fill, but the same thing was said back in 2008 when David Tennant announced he was quitting the role, so I remain confident that Smiths replacement will be an excellent choice and I cannot wait to see the adventures of the 12th Doctor.
Names such as Rory Kinnear and Sheridan Smith have been popping up all around the web as potential replacements, but for me the choice for the next Doctor must always be an unknown so that the fans can properly embrace them as the new look of the same character. So heres to the future – to both Matt’s promising Hollywood career and to the continuation of the ever changing, ever evolving British sci-fi show.
