Steven Moffat haunted by Doctor Who ‘Guilt’

Fans would say that Steven Moffat has many things to feel guilty about when it comes to Doctor Who, but the show runner himself has admitted to feeling uneasy about one major plot point.

2013 saw the 50th anniversary of the show, and of course an anniversary episode to celebrate – The Day of the Doctor which was penned by Moffat.  The episode saw the events of the Time War changed forever – going against the established order of events which had been built up over the course of the revived series.

In his article in Doctor Who magazine, Moffat revealed:  “‘The Day of the Doctor’ was a success. Record ratings, awards, rave reviews. By any measure, it did alright. But two years later, I’m still haunted by the guilt. I know some of you, including friends of mine, were upset that we reversed the outcome of the Time War. My defence, however feeble, is that given the chance, the Doctor would do exactly that. And it was his birthday, how could I deny him that chance? What could define him more? This man who always finds another way? And there he is, at every moment of his life, proving to himself – literally – that there is always a better path.”

Frankly of all the things Moffat has made canon or changed during his time as show runner, this is one of the things that I’m really ok with.  The episode made sense, it changed the Doctor’s destiny while keeping the events hinted at throughout the revived series intact, as the Doctor was left with memory loss so would still believe he had destroyed Gallifrey.

What are your thoughts?  Did The Day of the Doctor annoy you, or like me did it make sense to you?  Let us know in the usual ways guys…

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
