With the release this week of Supernatural Season on DVD and Blu-ray, we thought we’d take a look back at the story so far…
Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) Winchester; two brothers who lead very exciting and dangerous lives, for they are what is known as Hunters. Some folks may hunt for pheasants or maybe even bears, but these brothers hunt for things the simple everyday person has no idea about.
They hunt demons, vampires, werewolves, ghosts, and other mythical and supernatural beings. Most of what they hunt for has attacked (and, in a lot of cases, killed) innocent bystanders and left truly brutal trails of carnage behind them. The Winchesters pick up their information about possible attacks from newspapers, and other Hunters and, in some cases, from television news reports.
The good news is that they are not alone in their struggle. They have their late father’s friend, Bobby Singer (Jim Beaver), a fellow Hunter and a father-figure who helps the boys in whatever trouble they usually find themselves in. Also they have an ally in the form of Castiel (Misha Collins); an Angel who has taken quite a shine to the brothers, and knows full well the dangers his fellow allies and enemies can cause on Earth and especially above and below it.
For those of you who have been following the six previous seasons, the finale typically left the audience with many questions: Having absorbed all of that power, is Castiel really GOD? Has the genie really been left out of the bottle and if so, what are his intentions for the human race?
Season seven picks up literally where the previous season finished. Castiel, now more powerful than he has ever been, has absorbed all of the supernatural beings from purgatory into his human form. But there is a price that he never contemplated.
Right from the start, the audience is in for one shock after another as each episode unfolds to reveal some horrifying intentions for the humans and especially for Sam and Dean.
Sam, still having visions from his time in Hell with The Devil, is constantly struggling between reality and a nightmarish fantasy. Dean, ever witty and wise-cracking, is struggling to cope and understand his brother’s pain. Bobby is doing his best to keep the brothers together, meanwhile it seams that the whole of Hell is after them.
With many plot twists and shocks that the viewer never sees coming, the Winchesters encounter their most dangerous adversary yet, The Leviathans. Fresh from their release from Purgatory and hungry (literally) for Earth domination. Also making a welcome appearance in the season is Crowley (FTN favourite Mark Sheppard), ready to make more deals for souls, and have a little fun doing it.
So jump into Baby (that’s their black 1967 Chevrolet Impala), stick on your favourite classic rock cassette, grab a bag of salt and a lighter and sit back and enjoy the best season yet. Altogether now “Carry On My Wayward Son”…
