Tim Curry joins Clone Wars as Palpatine

March 1st, 2013 by Marc 2 Comments

Huge news Clone Wars fans, we have our new Palpatine. Last year the man behind the iconic voice, Ian Abercrombie, had passed away. Many Clone Wars fans, myself included, were deeply saddened by news of his passing. His work as Palpatine had been legendary and seamlessly flowed from the movies to the show. Well Huffington Post revealed in an exclusive that the new voice of Palpatine has been found, and that man is Tim Curry.

Many people know Curry from his roles in Rocky Horror Picture Show, Clue and as Pennywise in Stephen King’s It, now he can officially add Sith Lord to his voluminous resume. Dave Filoni, the Supervising Director for the Clone Wars knew this would be a mission to find the perfect actor stating, “We had an extensive search to find a new voice for Palpatine. It wasn’t just a matter of finding an actor who could to recreate lines from the films. We needed someone to deliver a performance that could stand alongside what Ian McDiarmid and Ian Abercrombie created as this legendary Star Wars character. At the end of the day, there is little question that bringing in an actor of Tim’s caliber was perfect for Chancellor Palpatine.”

Filoni went on to add, “I think fans will find that he delivers the eloquence needed for the Chancellor. His growling, evil, Sidious voice is a delight, because Tim can definitely tap into the dark side when needed. We are fortunate to have him.”

Curry will make his Star Wars debut on this Saturday’s wrap of its fifth season. This is certainly great news, but it also begs the question, what about the Clone Wars going forward? Lately there has been a huge outcry as news leaked that the suits at Disney weren’t too fond of the show and were considering letting it wrap after this season ended instead of moving it from Cartoon Network to one if its many stations such as Disney XD. So I have to ask, is this a commitment to a new season after this one? Why go through all the trouble of hiring such a noted actor as Curry if he will only be working to fill ten minutes of screen time total? You would think with Curry on board this may mean Clone Wars will indeed see life beyond it’s fifth season.

With Curry on board we are definitely in for a great performance, lets just hope that Disney sees the potential for the Clone Wars to keep drumming on.
