FTN’s Video Game News #1

December 16th, 2012 by Irwin Fletcher Comments

Welcome to the first weekly video game news for FTN. I do hope that in the near future this will be both a written piece and a watchable video on YouTube but for now this is the news in written form.

The Last of Us:  This is a great looking game from the studio Naughty Dog who are the creators of the Uncharted series on PS3.
It is a post-apocalyptic game that’s based many years after the event that made the world crumble, you play Joel who is one of the survivors living in a quarantine zone that’s run by the United States Military. When an old friend dies Joel promises he will get Ellie; a young girl who knows nothing of life before the apocalypse, out of the quarantine zone.
As they traverse the abandoned cities they come up against people who will do anything to survive, all the while being chased down by a military that seems hell bent in getting Ellie back.

For anyone who has been following this game here is the good news, it will be released on May 7th 2013. As someone who has been looking forward to this for a long time it is nice to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

The Phantom Pain:  This was a strange story this week, basically a trailer appeared for a game called The Phantom Pain, once released the internet nearly blew up with people saying they thought it could be Metal Gear Solid 5.
There are lots of compelling evidence online and lots of internet rumours, it may be a while before we hear the truth but as an avid fan of MGS I really hope this is MGS5

Journey Soundtrack Nominated for Grammy: No not the cheesy 80’s glam rock band but the beautiful PS3 game where you play a humanoid thing trying to get to a light on a mountain. It is a very simple game with amazing landscapes and a phenomenal sweeping feeling. The soundtrack only adds to this and considering there is no speech at all in this game it is the music that keeps it going. It is good to see music in video games getting its due, too long has these orchestral scores gone unnoticed, try playing a game without them, it’s not good at all.
Journey can be found on the PlayStation store for around £10

The Walking Dead Game Wins Game of the Year: That’s right The Walking Dead game by Telltale Games won Game of the Year at the Spike TV video game awards.
This is great news because this game is great. If you have yet to play it here is a basic rundown.
You play Lee a man who is on his way to prison when the zombie plague hits. When the police car crashes he escapes into a basic American neighbourhood and stumbles across Clementine, a very young girl whose babysitter parents are away and whose babysitter died.
You take it upon yourself to try and keep her safe. The game is like a classic point and click adventure but be warned there are some really big choices to make and you may regret making them later in the game.

I personally loved the game and think everyone should play it, especially if you are a big fan of Robert Kirkman’s comics as he had a hand in writing the game.

Dark Souls 2 Announced:  I wasn’t a fan of the original Dark Souls but enough people were for the Studio to announce that they are working on the second instalment.
It will be available for Xbox, PlayStation and PC. Although an online campaign is going ahead just now to get it ported to the Wii U.

More news on this as it breaks.

Black Ops 2 Patch 1.04:  The first Black Ops 2 patch hit last week and changed a lot of things to do with the game including changing the penetrating rate of Submachine guns and also their hip fire spread rate.
It has also fixed the prestige glitch which was used by hackers to prestige using a glitch in theatre mode and emblem mode.
There was a lot done on this patch and you can head over to this page to find out exactly what was changed.

Metro Last Light:  THQ has confirmed the much anticipated game will be released in March 2013. Also those who purchase the Limited edition will get ‘Ranger Mode’ difficulty. This is a difficulty designed to make the game harder and thus is only suggested for serious gamers.
