Physician, heal thyself.
Ladies and gentlemen, they’re back. Big Finish have just announced a series of upcoming Doctor Who audio dramas, set during the Time War and featuring Paul McGann and John Hurt. I’ll just let that sink in for a minute.
Ready? Good. Big Finish have announced a series of twelve (yes, twelve!) audio dramas featuring the War Doctor. Big Finish’s executive producer Jason Haigh-Ellery stated:
“I have been a huge fan of John since first seeing him in the repeats of I, Claudius in the 1980s and in his Oscar-nominated role as the eponymous The Elephant Man. Watching his performance in ‘The Day of the Doctor’ I did find myself fantasising that some far off day we might have the chance to work with him on the audio adventures of Doctor Who and now two short years later it’s happened! John wove a fantastic character together from a great script by Steven Moffat. Now we have the chance to get to know that character more and hear John stretch in the role. We’re all in for a hell of a ride as the War Doctor engages in battle. But who are the greater threat – the Daleks or the Time Lords?”
Big Finish’s adventures of the War Doctor will be released in four boxsets of three sixty minute episodes. The first set, to be titled ‘Only The Monstrous’, will be released in December.
The stories will feature Hurt alongside Jacqueline Pearce of Blake’s 7 fame, who will play Time Lady Cardinal Ollistra, arch manipulator and Time Lord general. The series is being written and directed by actor, writer, director and voice of the Daleks Nicholas Briggs.
And if that wasn’t enough, Big Finish are also working on a prequel boxset to the War Doctor saga, titled Doctor Who: The Eighth Doctor — The Time War. This storyline will let us see what exactly the Eighth Doctor did to ‘help out’ in the early stages of the Time War.
Set for release in November 2017, Paul McGann will be starring alongside characters introduced in the War Doctor series.
So, more McGann, more Hurt and more Time War. What’s not to love? Seriously, I’m getting kinda excited already. Just a shame we’ve got to wait til Christmas. Where’s my vortex manipulator?
