Jason Todd lives! Batman: A Death in the Family alternate ending getting full release 35 years later

It was the biggest comic book event of all-time, and one of comics’ most shocking moments – believe me, I was there! – and finally, we’re getting to see how it could have ended… and before this Christmas!

Batman #428 has lived in infamy ever since it was first released in 1988, just before Micheal Keaton and Tim Burton changed comic book movies forever with Batman in 1989, because of its killing off of a household name.

The issue that saw the death of the second Robin, Jason Todd, at the hands of The Joker – or, well, more accurately, the readers but we’ll get to that – in the epic Death in the Family story arc from the creative team of Jim Starlin, Jim Aparo, Adrienne Roy, Mike DeCarlo, and John Costanza, was released after a phone poll was put out to the fans… does Robin live or does he meet a grisly end at the hands of Joker?

Mark Hamill says he’s done playing Joker after the loss of Batman star Kevin Conroy

Comic fans are brutal.

They, of course, voted for the demise of the Boy Wonder and comic history was made… no-one was safe anymore, it was a brave new world.

Mind you, in truth, the final fate of Jason todd was called by a very slim margin, so they’re not all bad. Just most of them.

And yes, I know we’ve seen pages of the alternate ending where Batman finds a dying Robin just in time to save him but this December 12th, we’re finally getting the full story as it was originally released… in an alternate reality where you guys aren’t quite so bloodthirsty.

Given Jason Todd’s eventual return as Red Hood in the comics, it’s perhaps fitting that this is getting released.

I’ll be getting it first day, will you? Were you there on the day or am I just unfathomably old? Let me know, NErds and Nerdettes!

See you in the comic shop on December 12

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
