According to Schmoes Know, who first broke the news, it appears that Denzel Washington and Antoine Fuqua are in early talks to pair up yet again on MGM’s remake of The Magnificent Seven. Deadline and Variety have since run the story as well.
Both men have the offers and if they sign on it shouldn’t be too hard to flesh out the cast.
The original film starred Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, James Coburn, Charles Bronson, Robert Vaughn, Eli Wallach, and Brad Dexter and revolved around seven gunslingers that protect an oppressed Mexican village from a group of outlaws. If the story seems familiar it’s because it’s based on Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai.
Nic Pizzolatto (True Detective), wrote a draft and John Lee Hancock came on to rewrite. The setting is post Civil War, right at the end of the Wild West.
Washington and Fuqua first teamed up on Training Day and their next film, The Equalizer releases this September.
