20th Century Fox boss says they’re ‘waiting by the phone’ to make Speed 3

Wait… could we actually see Speed 3?!

With Speed recently turning 30, the movie is in the public eye again and stars Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock have both been pretty vocal about their willingness to make a third movie in the series – at a recent screening of the movie, Bullock said: “Before I die, before I leave this planet, I do think that Keanu and I need to do something in front of the camera. Are we, you know, in wheelchairs or with walkers? Maybe. Are we on little scooters at Disneyland?”

Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock really want to make Speed 3 together

However, she has also said that she doesn’t believe anyone would be brave enough to make the movie now, given that the stars are so old… which makes me wonder if she’s ever seen John Wick or anything starring Liam Neeson.

But now, in a new interview, 20th Century Studios Boss Steve Asbell has said that he would certainly entertain the idea of Speed 3: “Hollywood is brave enough. We are brave enough. We are sitting by the phone.”

Bullock said at the time: “The geriatric version. It won’t be fast… It would require a lot from everybody. I don’t know if we’re in an industry anymore that’s willing to tolerate it and be brave enough to do it. Maybe I could be wrong.”

Well, it certainly seems like she might be wrong; Asbell goes on: “It is one of those last movies that we haven’t remade. And to really be a reason to come back, it’s got to be a great idea and an idea that excites (Bullock and Keanu Reeves). Because that’d be the reason to see it. It’s obviously a really important title for us, but it’s not something we would handle lightly or just try to press them into service. They’d have to be a part of the development of that idea.”

Di Bonaventura confirms Constantine 2 script finished but he’s ‘scared’ to read it…

Of course, back in the day, the studio did churn out a sequel in Speed 2 which saw Reeves replaced by Jason Patrick and it was less than well received, and it pretty-much killed the franchise but I’d imagine with John Wick being one of the biggest franchises around and Reeves’ being a biggest star than ever, if he and Bullock had a script they liked and wanted to come back, 20th Century Fox would jump at the chance.

Will we see Speed 2 in the near future? I’m going to say yes.

Thoughts?
