While we have known for some time now that the MCU and Sony’s Marvel universe were connected (here), it seems that after Spider-man: No Way Home later this year, there’ll be no doubt in anyone’s mind.
We know that Sony’s Spider-man universe already features Venom and will soon also have Morbius, Carnage and Kraven but it’s still minus a Spider-man… for now.
Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group President Sanford Panitch said of his villain-driven universe that it’s part of a bigger plan: “We don’t really think of our 900 characters as the Spidey-verse. We have a Marvel universe. The volume of characters we have — you know, wait until you see this next Venom. You don’t miss Spider-Man.”
However, it seems that Spider-man – Tom Holland, most likely – is set to finally fit into the Sony/Marvel universe and we’ll see how before the end of this year: “There actually is a plan,” Panitch says.
“I think now maybe it’s getting a little more clear for people where we’re headed and I think when No Way Home comes out, even more will be revealed.”
We all know that between Spider-man: Far From Home and Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness will see the MCU dip its toes into the whole, well, multiverse idea with several villains from past Spider-man franchises returning (and more looking likely) with it seeming that perhaps we’ll see several realities clashing and old foes becoming part of the MCU… could this be how Spider-man joins the Sony movies? Well, possibly, but considering that we already saw Sony’s Morbius meeting the MCU’s Vulture in the Morbius trailer as well as an acknowledgment of Spider-man being part of that world (here), it seems there’s something more going on here.
Personally, I think they already exist in the MCU… Spider-man just hasn’t met them yet.
As for the rumored Sinister Six set-up in Far From Home, on mention of the team of supervillains finally appearing on screen, Panitch said: “It would be very cool, wouldn’t it?” concluded Panitch.
Yes. Yes, it would.
Spider-man No Way Home is set for release on December 17th, 2021.
