While the sequel to Alita: Battle Angel is something fans have been crying out for ever since the first movie hit in 2019, when the world was a very different place, things have been pretty quiet since January this year.
Late last year producer James Cameron and director Robert Rodriquez took an oath to bring back Rosa Salazar’s cyborg hero back to screens (here) and then in January, Cameron, ahead of the release of Avatar 2: The Way of Water, discussed possibly bringing the character back for a streaming series rather than a movie (here) and then… nothing.
But at least it seems that our girl was in everyone’s minds and we were getting somewhere. and then, over the last couple of months, I started to think that maybe it was all behind us.
But it’s not. Talks are happening and the success of the Avatar sequel might have gone a long way to making it happen.
“We’re working on it,” co-producer John Landau said recently.
“I think what we’ve learned from Avatar is how much more facial nuance and subtlety that we can get into characters that we want to be emotional and emote that are humanoid. Alita would not have been possible, but for what we did on Avatar. Avatar: Way of Water would not be what it is but what we did for Alita. And now let’s put that back and give it back to Alita. We’re talking to Robert and talking to Rosa and all is good.”
The first movie ended on a cliffhanger that set up at least one more movie, and I always hate to see a story left unfinished.
Cameron and Rodriquez take an oath to make Alita: Battle Angel sequel
Now, ahead of his new movie Hypnotic, starring Ben Affleck, Rodriquez has confirmed the talks and that he honestly, thought it was never going to happen but now he feels more reassured about it all: “I just wasn’t sure it was ever gonna happen because even when the first movie came out, Disney had just bought Fox, so even our marketing people, everybody, were gone by the time that movie came out. And then there weren’t any Fox movies being made for years because Disney was still busy making their own Disney stuff.
“But now I’ve seen some Fox movies come out, so that gave me hope. And then when Jon [Landau] mentioned that, and then [James Cameron] and I have been talking that we always wanted to do an ‘Alita’ sequel. He outlined, very thoroughly, a second and a third film, so there’s already material there. So yeah, we’re hoping that that will happen.”
With a loyal fanbase, stars that want to return and James Cameron pushing for it, it seems unthinkable that Alita: Battle Angel 2 isn’t a sure thing at this stage… but nothing is ever certain, even if I do have a good feeling about this one.
