Well, yet another of my favourite childhood movies is getting the remake treatment as Amblin set their sights on a remake of Arachnophobia.
The remake will be written by Freaky’s Christopher Landon and will be produced by horror maestro James Wan and The Conjuring’s Michael Clear, which concerns me because, as real as that horror talent all is, the original movie while dealing with the fear of Spiders, is very much a family movie worthy of Steven Spielberg. I don’t want it to become a flat-out horror movie, which the teaser poster, above, seems to hint at. Seriously, how terrifying is that?
The original movie starred Jeff Daniels as a big city doctor who moved to a small town with his young family to get away from the stress of living in the fast lane. The only problem was the new town was about to be in the grasp of a poisonous spider outbreak and Daniels was the unlikely hero who was also, you guessed it, terrified of spiders, hence the title.
I suffer from arachnophobia myself, and, as a teen, the first movie was one of my favorite cinema experiences and it holds up just as well today as I watched it recently with my kids who loved it too, so I really hope this version keeps that spirit alive and, if it is a sequel of sorts, I pray they bring back John Goodman as exterminator Delbert McClintock who stole the original movie. Just sayin’.
Anyways, let me know your thoughts, guys…
