Just a few days ago Andrew Garfield, Spider-man in the new Amazing Spider-man franchise, was talking about the future of the characters and movies and was open to the idea of Peter Parker passing the torch to Miles Morales (read it here), however it looks like that’s not going to happen. Ever.
Rumour is that Andrew Garfield will be stepping down after Amazing Spider-man 3 and director Marc Webb looks likely to go too, so the question is, what will Sony do? Surely a reboot isn’t going to happen, so recasting looks more likely, even though in the comics Peter Parker isn’t the only spider-man with Miles Morales and Miguel O’Hara having both worn the spandex.
But now producer Avi Arad spoke to The Playlist and made it very, very clear that that’s not going to happen: “No. The one thing you cannot do, when you have a phenomena that has stood the test of time, you have to be true to the real character inside – who is Peter Parker? What are the biggest effects on his life? Then you can draw in time, and you can consider today’s world in many ways. But to have multiple ones… I don’t know if you remember, but Marvel tried it. And it was almost the end of Spider-Man.”
So, that’s the end of that. So who’s going to be Spidey after Garfield? Let the speculation begin…
