It looks like Wonder Woman isn’t topping anytime soon on its mission to topple records and win over the global box office.
The movie, starring Gla Gadot and directed by Patty Jenkins isn’t just now officially DC’s biggest movie yet, toppling Man of Steel, Batman V Superman and the Suicide Squad.
And there’s still big things coming.
The movie has made in the area of $800 million world wide (almost half of that domestically) and has still to make it to the Japanese market, so a $1 billion final total isn’t out of the question.
This means that Wonder Woman is close to the earnings of Spider-man 2 and could end up the highest grossing comic book movie that didn’t star Batman or Iron Man. Impressive. And, on top of this, its 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes puts it on an even keel with Avengers and topped only by Nolan’s The Dark Knight.
As of now, it remains the highest earning movie directed by a woman bit no DC are set to to campaign to break the ultimate glass ceiling… the first comic-book film nominated for best picture.
On top of that, the awards season campaign will also push for a best director award for Jenkins, meaning that she would be the first comic book movie director nominated, including Christopher Nolan! And she’d be the first woman up for the award ever since Point Break and Near Dark director Kathryn Bigelow won for The Hurt Locker in 2010.
Exciting times, indeed.
They would need to be sure because the campaign will be a very expensive deal, however with a much younger voting body – including Gadot – the hope is that, for once, the Academy may finally recognise comic book movies as legitimate art.
But that’s not all…
With the Wonder Woman sequel already set for December 13th, 2019, it’s looking likely we’ll see Patty Jenkins return too, with her currently in negotiations with Warners and we also know that Geoff Johns is already peening the sequel which is set to begin filming next year.
But it looks like we can expect to see Gadot’s Diana Prince in other DC outings… we’ll see her later this year in Justice League but it also looks like she’s set for the Flash movie which will be the DC cataclysmic tale of Flashpoint and is currently set for release in 2020. This would make sense as Flashpoint is an event that should span the whole cinematic universe and it would be an obvious place to see Wonder Woman pop up; in fact, given the size of the movie, this could be DC’s version of Captain America: Civil War… and Avengers movie by any other name, right? Same goes for Justice League.
So there we have it; Wonder Woman is a massive success, it could be set for an Oscar and her character is set to be just as big a part of the DC Cinematic Universe as Batman. All in all, that’s a real result.
