During Frozen star Josh Gad’s interview with the cast and creators of the Back to the Future trilogy on Reunited Apart (here) writer/director Robert Zemeckis once and for all put an end to the idea of more movies in the series.
During the event, the topic of a fourth movie came up and it was met with, well, a frosty reception by co-writer Bob Gale , saying: “Well, it would have to be that Doc and Marty find out that we’re thinking about making another Back to the Future movie. They come back to stop us from doing such a crazy thing.”
Zemeckis added: “If I had an idea that I could have pitched to Bob with a straight face, we would have made it. I have no answer to that question.”
So, there’s no chance of another movie in the franchise or a reboot… and I salute that!
Remember in 2018, on the same topic, Zemeckis said: “There will never, ever be, in the most absolutely way, a Back to the Future 4. There will be no more Back to the Future.”
On the topic of Back to the Future, one of the biggest issues – and it’s a small issue at that – I have with the franchise is how when Marty’s parents have a son and he looks exactly like Calvin Klein, they didn’t think it was a bit odd.
Well, again, Gale has a simple, yet obvious explanation:
“Bear in mind that George and Lorraine only knew Marty/Calvin for eight days when they were 17, and they did not even see him every one of those eight days. So, many years later, they still might remember that interesting kid who got them together on their first date.
“But I would ask anyone to think back on their own high school days and ask themselves how well they remember a kid who might have been at their school for even a semester. Or someone you went out with just one time. If you had no photo reference, after 25 years, you’d probably have just a hazy recollection.
“So Lorraine and George might think it funny that they once actually met someone named Calvin Klein, and even if they thought their son at age 16 or 17 had some resemblance to him, it wouldn’t be a big deal. I’d bet most of us could look thru our high school yearbooks and find photos of our teen-aged classmates that bear some resemblance to our children.”
Simple, yet effective. Do you buy it? Let me know…
