One of my favourite – but even I can admit it’s naff – franchises is The Fast & Furious and while we’re waiting for the eleventh movie, I was pondering whatever happened the Hobbs & Shaw sequel and the Hobbs standalone movie that was announced back in June 2023.
And now, thanks to writer-producer Chris Morgan, we might have a bit of an idea just what’s happening.
Firstly, it seems that Dwayne Johnson’s standalone Hobbs movie, which was supposed to release between Fast X and Fast XI is now no longer on the board. Last year, after Johnson and Vin Diesel sorted out their differences and Johnson’s Hobbs returned to the franchise, fans were really happy and this got Johnson all fired up and he announced the movie, however, there has been nothing since,
It was believed at the time that the movie was not a sequel to 2019’s Hobbs and Shaw as Shaw, Jason Statham was not expected to return for that movie but rather it would focus on Hobbs going up against Jason Momoa’s villainous Reyes – look, I get it if you’re confused, I know the lore and I’m confused.
“[The release schedule] is really something the studio would have to speak to,” says Morgan, “We’re talking about what comes when and how, but I’ll leave that to greater minds than mine.
“I can say that I’m working on a Hobbs & Shaw kind of script. So we’ll see where that goes, but I’m excited about it.”
Fast & Furious update: Flashbacks, return to street racing, Paul Walker, spin-off TV series and more
It seems like the Fast & Furious franchise is a big haphazard at the minute but it’s definitely reassuring to learn that Morgan, who has been with the franchise since 2006’s Tokyo Drift, is still involved, still writing and still excited.
The last few movies have been far too over the top for even this franchise but I do love the massive world they’ve created and the Fast movies continue to sit on the same shelf as Scream, Riddick and John Wick in my head, so I will always have some excitement for more of that world.
I’m not a complicated man.
Thoughts?
Where will Dwayne Johnson’s Luke Hobbs movie fit in the Fast & Furious’ future?
