Well, it was reported a few days ago that the Star Wars franchise – at least on the big screen – was taking a break until 2022 when it would make its return to our galaxy with a whole new franchise beginner.
But were unsure who would be in charge of said new story as two frontrunners were previously revealed.
The first is Rian Johnson, the man behind The Last Jedi, who was apparently working on a standalone trilogy. The next was David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the frontrunners of Game of Thrones.
And until seven weeks ago – roughly when Game of Thrones’ final season kicked off – I would have said Benioff and Weiss were, without question, the men for the job. But now it seems that unless they are just copying and pasting George RR Martin’s words onto a script they are, well, a bit crap.
However, the paradox is I wouldn’t let Rian Johnson direct my kids’ school play after the train wreck that was The Last Jedi.
But now, at the MoffetNathanson Media & Communications summit earlier today, Walt Disney Company chairman Bob Iger confirmed that the 2022 instalment will be the one from… Benioff and D.B. Weiss
“We did a deal with David Benioff and D.B Weiss, who are famous for Game of Thrones, and the next movie that we release will be theirs. And we’re not saying anything more about that,” Iger said.
What does this mean? Will it be a staggered approach with their trilogy and Johnson’s running alongside each other with staggered releases? Does it mean – here’s hoping – Johnson’s trilogy is canned (look, be honest, from a business point of view – even if you loved The Last Jedi – it would make no sense – at all! – to hire someone as divisive as him. Alienate half of your audience before a camera even roles? Iger is a smarter man than that.
So, what do you think? Are you excited? Sad? Couldn’t care anymore? Let me know…
