It’s been 16 years since 28 Weeks Later, the sequel to Danny Boyle’s 2002 hit 28 Days Later and there’s always been a fan desire for 28 Months Later and more but it was starting to look less and less likely until now.
The story of a world overtaken by a zombie apocalypse – kinda, they’re really people who can’t control their rage – the movie was responsible for giving us fast-moving zombies, there are infinite possibilities for more stories to be told and now, finally, all the pieces may be in play to make it happen.
I reported in December last year that a new entry may not be impossible and now director Danny Boyle, writer Alex Garland and even original star Cillian Murphy are keen to return to a devastated world.
Danny Boyle, Alex Garland and Cillian Murphy all up for third 28 Days Later movie
“A few years ago an idea materialised in my head for what would be really 28 Years Later,” Garland says, adding: “Danny [Boyle] always liked the idea.”
So, it seems that the idea is to skip the more obvious 28 Months Later and go to years after the original outbreak.
“We’re talking about it quite seriously, quite diligently,” Boyle adds, “If he doesn’t want to direct it himself I’ll be well up for it if we can execute a similarly good idea.”
It seems that a legal copyright issue was the reason we didn’t get a sequel sooner but obviously, there must be movement there too if Boyle and Garland are discussing another entry.
Garland says that he wasn’t happy with 28 Weeks Later which, to be fair, took the small personal story of the first movie and turned it into a big Hollywood-type blockbuster event movie, losing the feel of the original.
On the news that Boyle and Garland are toying with a new movie in the series, Cillian Murphy said: “That’s great to hear. I didn’t know that – I would be there in a flash. I made two movies with both of those guys, and I would love to work with them again. Of course, I’m there.”
Now, to be clear, there’s no reason to believe that Murphy is even part of the discussions that the other two are having – after all, he wasn’t in 20 Weeks Later – but I’d have to imagine that, after the success of the brilliant Oppenheimer, the idea of having Murphy back to tell the rest of Jim’s (his character) story would be too good to pass up.
We can hope, right?
