It looks like the King’s Man/Kingsman franchise is dead in the water for now, despite plans in 2023 featuring numerous movies and spin-offs.
The series based on Mark Miller’s comic series and overseen by director Matthew Vaughn had three ongoing movie threads with the original Kingsman movies, the King’s Man prequel and the surprise entry in the series Argyll last year and last we heard last year, there was a lot of plans to keep the series going.
Matthew Vaughn talks more Kingsman/King’s Man movies and teases the rise of Hitler story
“The next one is about the rise of Hitler,” Vaughn said of King’s Man 2, “and how Hitler did come to power and basically was supported by the English aristocracy.”
Fans also had Kingsman: Blue Blood to look forward to and Vaughn hinted that it would bring together all the movies in the series so far: “I saw how people loved the relationship of Eggsy and Harry. So we just came up with this thing, what could be the ultimate reason for them to either fall in love or to hate each other forever? So that’s what this movie is all about is will they or won’t they, let’s just say.”
He also says that fans might need to ensure they’ve seen The King’s Man before it comes out: “We’ve put seeds for what’s going to happen in ‘Kingsman 3’ all the way back into this. I know the storyline. The idea for the third one will blow everything you think you know about it out of the water.”
However, when Aryll was released earlier this year and had a surprise reveal that it was connected to the Kingsman universe it looked like we had a third franchise spinoff to get into, especially since it and The King’s Man both had open endings but now it seems that the series, for the foreseeable future, is stalled.
20th Century Fox boss says they’re ‘waiting by the phone’ to make Speed 3
In a new interview, 20th Century Studios Boss Steve Asbell was asked if there’s any King’s Man sequels or prequels planned, to which he simply replied: “There’s no plans on doing them anytime soon.”
I find it very unlikely that Argyll detailed the whole franchise, but it seems that there were several projects planned in that universe last year, and now, well, there isn’t. How this happened or what changed, we may never know but while I wasn’t as big a fan of the Kingsman universe as I was with, say, John Wick or Fast & Furious, I did have fun with them all (even Argyll) and would be more than happy to see the series continue.
