Dune Part 3 closer than I originally thought, says Denis Villeneuve

It seems we may be heading back to Arrakis sooner than we thought as Dune Part 3 has now become a priority for director Denis Villeneuve and production will begin in early 2026.

With Dune and Dune Part 2 opening in 2021 and 2024, that means we could see part 3, Dune: Messiah, following suit with a 2027 release date.

“Let’s say that I thought that after Part Two that I will take a break, that I will go back in the woods and stay in the woods for a while to recover. But the woods weren’t really suiting me, and I would go back behind the camera faster than I think. But that’s all I can say,” Villeneuve says.

However, taking place over a decade later, Villeneuve stresses that Dune 3 will feel very different to parts 1 and 2: “It was really a pair of movies that will be the adaptation of the first book. That’s done and that’s finished. If I do a third one, which is in the writing process, it’s not like a trilogy. It’s strange to say that, but if I go back there, it’s to do something that feels different and has its own identity.”

That said, as different as it may be intended to be, it seems there will be a lot of familiar faces appearing with the director confirming the return of Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh and Anya Taylor-Joy, saying that “they have to return. They are with the main cast when it happens. And more worms. What can I say?”

Along with the Dune: Prophecy series on the horizon, the Dune universe has the potential to become the next Star Wars… after all, at one stage in the past Star Wars was the new Dune.

Let me know.
