Dwayne Johnson announces new standalone Luke Hobbs movie

Man, what is going on over at Fast & Furious HQ 🤣?

So, if you’ve seen Fast X in the cinema, you’ll know that there’s a big surprise at the end as Dwayne ‘I’ll never work with Vin Diesel or star in another Fast & Furious movie!’ Johnson appears in a mid-credit scene, setting him up for the next (and second last) movie as Luke Hobbs, the agent who befriended Diesel’s Dominic Toretto earlier in the series while falling out fully with him off-screen.

It’s a cool reveal and, to be honest, not having him back would have made the final movies make little sense as his character was also responsible for the creation of the villain Dante played by Jason Momoa – look, you either know or you don’t.

But after the news that when the last two movies are finished, there will be more spinoffs and maybe even a Torettos movie (below), it seems that Hobbs is getting a standalone movie too – and that’s outside of the Hobbs and Shaw series he fronts with Jason Statham.

Vin Diesel says female-led Fast and Furious still coming and a Torettos movie could be on the way too

Man, I love this series but I’m getting tired.

The as-yet-untitled movie will be written by long-time Fast writer Chris Morgan – who wasn’t involved in the Fast 9 or Fast X – who worked with Johnson on the first Hobbs and Shaw movie in 2019.

By the way, I’ve heard that both Ryan Reynolds and Kevin Hart will return for this movie, reprising their roles from Hobbs and Shaw but – as of now – it’s unlikely Statham’s Deckard Shaw will appear.

So, to be clear, this is not a sequel to Hobbs and Shaw, nor is it the sequel to Fast X; no, this is a fully standalone Hobbs movie.

If I were a betting man, I would say this will likely see Hobbs’ story between Hobbs and Shaw and the cameo at the end of Fast X meaning I would doubt we’ll see Diesel or any other Fast & Furious characters appearing.

“Last summer Vin and I put all the past behind us,” Johnson said in his social media announcement video (below), “We’ll lead with brotherhood and resolve – and always take care of the franchise, characters & FANS that we love,”

Looks like we have a lot of Fast & Furious content still to come and Johnson, possibly still stung after the underperforming of Black Adam, is now planning on holding on to the franchise and keeping Hobbs alive and fighting… and, truth be told, I’m ok with it all.

Thoughts? I know you have them! Voice-off in the usual ways on FTN’s FacebookTwitter and Instagram
