We reported yesterday that a sequel to Big Trouble in Little China was possibly in the works at Fox (here).

We were actually excited that, with the Ghostbusters reboot and Point Break remake (not to mention TRON 3 being cancelled), Fox were doing something that we, as fans, could actually support.

Well, put that all away because it looks like the we were wrong and even Big Trouble In Little China isn’t safe.

It seems that the sequel (if it ever was) is not the plan any more, but rather it’s now a case of goddamned remake! Goddamn it!

Now it seems that X-Men: First Class writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz have been hired to script the remake/reboot of the John Carpenter classic starring Kurt Russell as Jack Burton, cinema’s greatest anti-hero: a trucker who unwittingly stumbles into a supernatural adventure that shook the pillars of Hell.

Now, if there’s a plus side to this – and we’re really trying here – it’s that Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is on board to play the role of Burton this time out and will also co-produce.

Look, we love the Rock here at FTN, really we do. But dammit! This is the final nail in the coffin as movies that were such a big part not just of my childhood but of who I actually am (and so many others at FTN) are pulled down and needlessly rebuilt. If I was asked to name my top five favourite movies of all-time Ghostbusters, Big Trouble In Little China, Robocop and Point Break would all be in there. And none of them are sacred any more.

It’s time someone put Hollywood out of all our miseries.

Thanks Fox, you just took one of the last bits of faith I has left in cinema.

Here’s the full original movie, I’ll be watching it while rocking back and forth over in the corner.

Enjoy.
