It looks like, as we suspected, Dwayne Johnston is done with the Fast & Furious movies and will not be appearing in either of the final two movies in the series.
Johnston and franchise star Diesel have a long-reaching conflict on the series with their egos battling it out regularly (here), but it seems that The Rock has decided to step down… but fear not, Luke Hobbs will still appear in the Fast & Furious spin-off series of movies, Hobbs and Shaw.
Producer and president of production at Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions Hiram Garcia confirmed the star is still happy to continue with the character of Hobbs in the standalone adventures with co-star Jason Statham as Deckard Shaw, saying: “After filming Fast 8 DJ made the clear decision to close the Fast & Furious chapter for all the evident reasons. He wished them all well and shifted our focus on to other storytelling avenues. So while he will not be in F10 or F11, that won’t in any way interfere with our Hobbs plans.
“Obviously all these characters exist in the Fast universe and we love to see all aspects of that universe thrive and succeed. We just have specific plans for what we want to do with the Hobbs character and I think the fans are going to love it! We’re working to deliver something very unique and fresh and we know the studio is eager for us to get into it ASAP!”
With all that said, Johnston is busy enough to tire out any three actors with the sequel to this summer’s Jungle Cruise now announced and, if that’s not enough, it seems that despite having his Black Adam and Super Pets movies in the pipeline at DC/Warner, the star may be dabbling with the idea of appearing in the MCU too!
“DJ and [Marvel boss] Kevin [Feige] have a great relationship and we’ve flirted around a few ideas before, but nothing serious. There’s mutual admiration for what we each have been doing and what Kevin has built over there is truly incredible,” Garcia said.
“Ultimately though for us, we’ve always been very committed to what we wanted to build with Black Adam. Black Adam was the character we wanted to bring to life and who we felt DJ was destined to play. Once we set our sites on this character over a decade ago it was hard to imagine DJ playing anyone else.”
So, He’s happy enough with Black Adam being the strongest character in the DCEU… for now.
Would you like to see him back in the FF franchise? Or would you like to see him playing a Marvel character? Let me know all your thoughts.
