UPDATED AGAIN: Dwayne The Rock Johnston confirms he’ll play Black Adam in Shazam! NOT part of the Man of Steel universe?

September 3rd, 2014 by Marc 1 Comment

Well we knew it would be Shazam! or Black Adam (here)… but now it’s official; Dwayne Johnston IS Black Adam!

Yes, The Rock just Tweeted that he will be playing Shazam’s mortal enemy, Black Adam in an upcoming DC/Warners movie – no details on date, director etc yet. But hey, it’s The Rock playing a DC super villain… so it’s enough for now.

Comingsoon write: “Originally Teth-Adam of Kahndaq, the character first appeared in Marvel Family #1 in 1945 and has gone on to be both a villain and an anti-hero throughout his history. The character has powers comparable to that of Shazam, including flight, strength, agility, lightning manipulation, as well as magic.”

It’s almost embarrassing how excited I am for this…

UPDATE

Variety are reporting that DC Animated Flashpoint writer Darren Lemke (he also wrote on Lost and, em, Shrek Ever After)  is set to write the script.

Johnson and Hiram Garcia are also producing: “We Love Dwayne and have had nothing but success with him over the years,” said Toby Emmerich, President and COO of New Line. “When I look at Dwayne both off screen and on screen, he is such a larger than life character and it just made perfect sense to me that we put him in a DC comic movie. You look at these comic book characters and they have this certain swag and charisma that Dwayne carries with him where ever he is so that’s why this always made sense.”

Looks liek things are moving ahead at a pace already…

UPDATE 2

New Line president Toby Emmerich, speaking to EW, says the Shazam will be a very unique movie: “It feels to me like Shazam will have a tone unto itself,” he explains. “It’s a DC comic, but it’s not a Justice League character, and it’s not a Marvel comic. The tone and the feeling of the movie will be different from the other range of comic book movies [but it will] have a sense of fun and a sense of humor. But the stakes have to be real.”

So, it sounds to us like Shazam is going to be a self-contained universe. We thought this yesterday but didn’t want to comment in case we were wrong, but it certainly seems that this is the plan – pity as we were so looking forward to Shazam meeting Superman too.

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
