It looks like the DCU is set to get larger still with a new animated movie coming focusing on two of Batman’s former Robins, Dick Grayson and Jason Todd.
When we learned that a live-action Batman: The Brave and the Bold movie was coming, it was clear that it would feature a Damien Wayne Robin, the son of Bruce Wayne/Batman this meant that not only would this be a fun new take on Batman and Robin on the big screen, but fans will also know that, if the story follows the comics, then there has already been several other Robins and it seems that this new movie will explore their backstory.
The movie, Dynamic Duo is from DC Studios and Warner Bros Pictures Animation and is being made by a new animation studio called Swaybox based in New Orleans.
You can get a look at Swaybox’s animation style in the demo reel below, as it’s a mix of CGI animation, practical elements of stop-motion, and live-action real-time performance, so it’s really something very special, indeed.
The movie is being produced by DC Studios’ James Gunn and Peter Safran and Matt Reeves, although it’s believed it will not be commented to Reeves’ Batman movies, but rather will be set in Gunn’s bigger DCU.
“I have wanted to make a film with […] Swaybox for many years, and for that film to be Dynamic Duo, an incredibly special and unique Batman and Robin story for families, is a dream,” Reeves said.
On working with Reeves, Gunn said: “We love Matt as a director and producer so he’ll be producing stories both within his The Batman universe and within the DCU.”
This means that Dynamic Duo is the first DCU project overseen by both Gunn and Reeves.
Taking to social media to announce the project, Gunn wrote: “Over the moon excited to announce the newest DC Studios/Warner Bros Pictures Animation greenlit film for theaters, DYNAMIC DUO, the story of Robin… or should I say, Robins, as in Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. The first feature film from the visionary Swaybox, a mix of animation, puppetry, and CGI, a script from the wonderfully talented Matt Aldrich, produced with our partners at Matt Reeves’ 6th & Idaho. This is something special.”
