With all the rumours of Micheal Keaton’s Batman appearing in the upcoming Flash movie, we were starting to wonder if it actually was an adaptation of the Flashpoint storyline at all.
Word is that Keaton will reprise the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman as he last played in 1992’s Batman Returns, making him a pivotal character in the DC universe moving forward, being a Batman from another universe and introducing the multiverse to DC fans.
In Flashpoint Barry Allen/Flash goes back in time and saves his murdered mother’s life but in doing so he creates an alternate reality where there are both minor and major changes in the universe. One such difference is that, on that fateful night in Crime Alley it is no longer Thomas and Martha Wayne who die, but rather their son, Bruce; this creates a new Batman – Thomas Wayne – who dons the suit to avenge his son, while Martha becomes mentally scarred and becomes the Joker of this world.
Now, there was also talk that Jeffrey Dean Morgan was reprising the role of Thomas Wayne from Batman V Superman (here) which seemed to confirm our hopes that it was Flashpoint we were getting.
However, it came out later that Keaton’s Batman would replace Thomas Wayne in the movie (here), a rumour seemingly conformed by Morgan himself (here) and therefore it had us wondering… if it’s a multiverse movie, then it’s possible it’s not Flashpoint.
However, director Andy Muschietti seems to have comfirmed that the story, well, is Flashpoint.
In a new radio interview he said of the movie and plot: “It is a story of time travel: Flash travels back to try to save his mother.
“It is a spectacular action movie but it has a big heart.”
Well, if it’s a true Flashpoint movie then it will be interesting to see how Keaton fits in. But, in all honesty, if we’re getting Keaton back in a Flash movie, I’ll be there opening night, no matter the storyline.
Let me know your thoughts, gang…
The Flash currently has a 2022 release date.
