Last week DC Entertainment’s president, Diane Nelson, stepped down and today, the day before the possible merger of AT&T and Warner Bros, DC Entertainment president and chief creative officer Geoff Johns has stepped down to enter a new role at DC.
Johns, who has, fairly or not, been receiving a lot of grief over the mess that was Justice League, is launching Mad Ghost Productions and he will be entering into an exclusive writer-producer deal with Warner Bros. and DC.
Johns’ first major project will be the upcoming Green Lantern Corp.
Current DC Entertainment publisher Jim Lee will assume the chief creative officer position, taking on the duties while continuing to act as publisher with Dan DiDio. The two have jointly held the post since 2010.
Johns will still be consulted over DC’s movies and TV shows.
“I took on a role at DCE because I love the characters and this universe more than anything. But, I want to spend my days writing and on set. I’m thrilled to get back to a more hands-on creative role. It’s a dream job on dream projects, reaching even deeper into DC’s vast pantheon of characters,” said Johns in a statement.
Johns had written the Green Lantern comics for nine years, so he certainly knows the characters.
Interestingly, Mad Ghost Productions’ website talks about the movie and confirms a long held fan dream: “Once of DC Comics’ greatest Super Hero universes, the film will feature Hal Jordan and John Stewart…”
“Geoff is a super talented writer and truly embedded in the DC Universe and its characters,” stated Warners Bros chairman Toby Emmerich.
“We’re thrilled that he’s returning to his passion and his roots as a writer and producer. And, it’s even better that he’s staying in our Warner Bros. family. We look forward to working with him on ‘Green Lantern’ and other projects going forward.”
While many had hoped Johns would become DC’s answer to Kevin Feige, we’re glad to see him step into a more creative role and can’t wait to see what Lee brings to the table.
