Idris Elba set to replace Will Smith as Deadshot in Suicide Squad sequel

March 7th, 2019 by Marc Comments

We reported a couple of weeks back that Will Smith was not returning for James Gunn’s upcoming sequel to Suicide Squad and, even worse, rather than just writing his character, Deadshot, out of the movie, we heard that Warners were looking to recast him (here).

And now it looks like we may know whose replacing Smith… Idris Elba.

“Sources say that Elba met with Gunn on Friday and it went so swimmingly that talks began with the studio in earnest. Elba was the first and only choice for Gunn and the studio.”

Now, we love Smith and Elba, but recasting seems like such a dumb move. In a universe full of interesting villains, why not just pick a different one and cast Elba in the role, leaving Smith free to return  – should he want – at some later date?

Word is that Warners are very happy with Gunn’s latest script and are keen to get going, with word being that Gunn is mostly looking to bring in new DC characters rather than using the ones established in David Ayer’s first movie.

We’re also hearing that Joel Kinnaman may not return as Rick Flagg.

The Suicide Squad has an August 6th, 2021 release date.
