It’s all happening over at the DC/Warners camp tonight and it’s all good…
So, you may recall we reported a few weeks back that Idris Elba was cast as Deadshot as Will Smith was unable to return for Suicide Squad 2 (here) and at the time, as much as we love Elba, we suggested that surely it would be a better idea to have Elba play a new character and leave the door open for Smith to return at a future point.
It would mean that both characters would still exist and the DC movies have two awesome black characters leading the charge…
Well, now, it seems that Warners were listening to us (yeah, right) because that’s exactly what’s happening.
It is unknown what character Elba would now be playing, but after taking the last few weeks to discuss, everyone involved felt this was the right move. The team also did not want to feel as if it was disrespecting Smith, who helped bring this character to life for the first time, by replacing him with Elba.
See? Perfect… we get Elba as a new brilliant character – Bronze Tiger cough cough – and Deadshot is out there being all villainy.
And as if that’s not enough, two more of the original movie cast – who we had previously reported were likely to return – are coming back for James Gunn’s Suicide Squad movie.
Firstly, the brilliant Viola Davis is returning as Amanda Waller, the devious but brilliant government character who created and runs the squad.
And by her side will be the man who controls the team on the good, Rick Flagg who will now once again be played by returning Joel Kinnaman.
Now… we’re wondering if the glimpse of the Jared Leto version of Joker – likely played by someone else in the scene – in Birds of Prey along with Leto’s mysterious clown image on social media (read all about it here) could possibly mean that he is retuning to the role in the new Suicide Squad movie? We can but hope…
I admit I’m not a fan of James Gunn making this one… but i’m finding it hard not to be excited.
So Viola David, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney and Margot Robbie are all back. Tell me again how this is a reboot…
Thoughts?
Suicide Squad hits cinemas on August 6th, 2021.
