Forget War Machine, this is Iron Patriot.
Both are played by / operated by / Don Cheadle’s character, James Rupert “Rhodey” Rhodes, but in Iron Man 3 his armour’s been given both an upgrade and a flash new paint job. This is the Iron Patriot, originally operated in the comics by Spiderman big bad Norman Osbourne. But with Osbourne tangled up in Sony Pictures web, its up to Rhodey to don the star and striped suit.
Where the sparks are from is a mystery, what weapon that is on his back unclear – something machine gun-like is a safe bet – but it’s good to see that the former War Machine is going to get in on the action in Shane Black’s upcoming comic-book threequel.
The movie, of course, finds Robert Downey Jr’s billionaire playboy philanthropist up to his metallic neck in trouble as he’s targeted by the Mandarin (Ben Kingsley) and other nasty types intent on taking him down a peg or 15. Check out the trailer below for a better handle on what to expect.
Iron Man 3, directed by Shane Black from a script by Black and Drew Pearce, also features Ben Kingsley, Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Rebecca Hall, James Badge Dale and Jon Favreau. It’ll finally swagger into our cinemas on April 26.
