Is there movement on the next Mad Max movie after all?

Is the fifth Mad Max movie back on again?

Creator and director of the Mad Max franchise George Miller had discussed his plans for a fifth movie before the release of Furiosa, saying: “In doing what we did in the preparation of Mad Max: Fury Road, we also wrote what happened to Max in the year before we encounter him in [that film].

“And as we get towards the end of [Furiosa], the chronology, basically, we had to see that Mad Max was lurking around somewhere because we do know what happened. The writers know what happened to Mad Max in that year before, and we have a whole story of that, which I would like to do sometime if I get the chance.”

George Miller says he’s working on next Mad Max movie and talks possibility of Mel Gibson return

However, when Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, which is a great little entry in the lore of Max Rockatansky, opened and failed to set the box office on fire, it looked like Mad Max’s fifth movie was as doomed as society in those movies.

However it seems that maybe there’s movement.

Discussing all the stories and scripts he has in his head and on paper, Miller says that Mad Max may yet live another day: “There’s lots of stories,” he says, “Indeed, one of them is a Mad Max. It is not something I would do next, because there;s two things I’m keen to do next. But if for whatever reason the planets align, you can never tell. Too often, you’re lining up to do a movie and then something happens. Some things fall into place and some don’t, so all I can say is we’ll see.”

When Tom Hardy took over the iconic role from Mel Gibson in 2015’s Fury Road, it seemed that Max was back in a big way as it was a great success both at the box office and with fans of the series, however when Furiosa, starring Anya-Taylor Joy came out last year, despite being pretty good, it didn’t hit financially or with the fans.

Now, there’s a myriad of reasons for that, some political, others not, but one reason may be as simple as Mad Max’s franchise is one where the fans want to see Max front and centre, meaning that perhaps the nex Mad Max movie will move ahead as long as Max is the main character.

I love the world of Mad Max and I actually like Hardy’s world more than Gibson’s original trilogy, although I love those too, so I’m more than happy to see more entries, be they comics, tv shows, movies, games.. whatever may come.

Interestingly, in a new interview, Hardy’s reaction to heading to Australia to film another Mad Max is entertaining but also feels like maybe, just maybe there’s something happening on that front:

Could a proposed Mad Max prequel save the franchise?
