While Kraven the Hunter is set to hit cinemas this weekend, it seems that Sony’s Marvel-adjacent cinematic universe is already dead.
While director of the movie starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the anti-hero Kraven, JC Chandor is already talking up a sequel and where he’d like to take the story, it seems that the chances of that happening are next to zero.
“It’s essentially this building of a villain,” Chandor says of the new movie, adding: “The final piece in that, for Aaron [Taylor-Johnson] and for me, was in “Kraven’s Last Hunt,” which, if this thing works and is a success, that’s where we’d have this story end. It’s obviously very tragic and sad. The journey getting there is a wild crazy ride with a lot of fun, but the character we’re trying to create is one who could realistically, if this film is a success, end with Last Hunt.”
Alas, with the movie not getting any advance press screenings and reports saying that at CCXP Brazil this weekend neither stars nor fans turned out for the panel, it seems that any further adventures is very, very unlikely and that goes for Madame Web, Venom and Morbius too it seems.
A new report from The Wrap says that a top talent agent reports that Sony is done with these movies and will be concentrating on the MCU Spider-man movies along with the animated Beyond the Spider-verse and Spider-man Noir live-action series starring Nicholas Cage: “They’ve developed what they want to develop for now. It’s really about the next ‘Spider-Man’ film.,” the agent says.
The only real success they’ve had is with the Venom trilogy and as fun as they are, they’re not good movies.
“The biggest issue with the Sony Spider-Man spinoffs seems to be the lack of quality control. The movies just aren’t good,” a second Sony insider says, “sometimes that lack of quality meets a movie no one asked for, which was the case with Madame Web, and that is a no-win scenario. It may be time for Sony to start cultivating different IP to launch new franchises.”
With Sony head Amy Pascal saying they’re currently focused on Spider-man 4, it seems that for now, the world of other villains are shelved: “We have to deal with the fact that he decided he was going to give up being Peter Parker and he was gonna focus on being Spider-Man, because being Peter Parker was too hard. So that’s what the movie is about.”
The best thing sony could do at this stage would be to give Marvel/Disney their characters back and sit back and rake in the money, as MArvel give us a new MCU-centric take on these characters.
Or am I wrong? Whatever you think, with Venom’s trilogy wrapping earlier this year, it seems that this world and Kraven’s Last Hunt is earlier than they thought.
What say you all?
