Well, it looks like Metropolis has a new threat in the form of an all-new Lex Luthor!
James Gunn, according to the trades, has hired About a Boy and X-Men star Nicholas Hoult for the role of Luthor in his upcoming Superman: Legacy, facing off against already cast David Corenswet as Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. So it seems that, while some of the old faces are hanging around in Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe, others are very much fresh-faced and new.
It was also revealed earlier this week that María Gabriela De Faría will play the villain The Engineer, part of The Authority, in the movie.
Little is known about the movie at this stage, with it being a full new reboot and the first big screen entry into the new DCU in 2025, with Gunn and Safran developing a connected universe that will include movies, games, TV shows and more.
Holt himself has, at various points in the past, been attached to the role of Superman, Batman and even Lex, so it must be a great feeling for him to finally have nabbed the role of one of the three biggest gigs in superhero movies.
The star is no stranger to comicbook movies, having played Beast in the last few X-Men movies and have roles such as Renfield and Mad Max: Fury Road under his belt.
While many are angry at how DC/Warners have handled the DCEU/DCU handover – and I think the whole thing, especially the way they treated Henry Cavill as Superman, was poorly handled and has left a bad taste in the mouth – I am excited to see what Gunn is planning for the worlds of DC with it seeming that he’s diving right in with a world populated by aliens, robots, heroes, monsters and more, rather than, as we saw with the previous DCEU, building it all up gradually.
Superman: Legacy has been set for a worldwide release on July 11, 2025.
