Looks like the tenth Fast & Furious movie has found its villain in the shape of Aquaman.
Yes, Jason Momoa is reportedly very close to signing on the dotted line to join the last two-part movie in the ludicrously popular (and fun) franchise.
Momoa will go up against Vin Diesel’s Dom Torretto and his team including Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges and Sung Kang in the movie to be directed by regular series director Justin Lin.
Now, on first appearance this is just a fun bit of casting but there could be more to it than that.
Everyone knows about Diesel and Dwayne Johnson’s falling out over the franchise and Diesel’s apparent anger of the Hobbs & Shaw spin-off featuring Johnson and how Johnson has promised he’d not be returning to the Fast franchise, despite Diesel’s public pleading online, calling him his little brother.
“Vin’s recent public post was an example of his manipulation,” said Johnson.
“We had spoken months ago about this and came to a clear understanding. My goal all along was to end my amazing journey with this incredible ‘Fast & Furious’ franchise with gratitude and grace. It’s unfortunate that this public dialogue has muddied the waters. Regardless, I’m confident in the ‘Fast’ universe and its ability to consistently deliver for the audience, and I truly wish my former co-stars and crew members the best of luck and success in the next chapter.”
Simple enough, right?
Wrong.
It was revealed after the first Hobbs & Shaw movie that Momoa was set to appear in that movie as Hobbs’ (Johnson) brother but couldn’t due to scheduling (here): “Me and [Jason] Momoa tried hard to get him in this movie to play my brother,” Johnson said at the time, “but his schedule was too packed. Next Hobbs movie for sure.”
So, this could be Diesel locking Momoa in, meaning he can’t appear in the Hobbs & Shaw movies.
Now, we know that the Fast franchsie has a history of misdirection and redeeming character – Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw appeared first as a villain and is now one of the good guys, so yes, they could have Momoa cross into the Hobbs & Shaw movies as the villain from the Fast franchise who – shock! Horror! – turns out to be Hobb’s brother.
But since they already did that with John Cena’s Jakob being a villain who was redeemed… and turned out to be Dom’s estranged brother, it’s unlikely they’ll do the same thing again. But, then again, they might.
Yes, this series is nuts.
Yes, that’s why we love it so much.
Thoughts? I want to hear them…
Fast 10 – or whatever it’ll be called – is set for release on May 19th, 2023.
