We learned at Star War Celebration Europe a couple of weeks ago that Daisy Ridley was returning as Rey for a new movie set fifteen years after The Rise of Skywalker and, even though I’m not a fan of the last two movies in the saga, I’m excited to see what Ridley does when given a script that does her justice.
I have said several times though that, if Rey is back, then Finn – played by John Boyega – needs to return also; in The Force Awakens, it was heavily hinted that Finn was a Force user before that whole notion was totally sidetracked and Finn was reduced to comic relief in The Last Jedi and by the time we got to The Rise of Skywalker, an attempt was made to restore the idea that Finn was a fledgling Jedi but it barely registered with most viewers, so if Rey is forming a new Jedi Order in this new movie, it’s only fair that she be doing so with Finn.
Maybe this is what Star Wars head Kathleen Kennedy meant when she said “It’s entirely possible to see some people come back,” when asked if others from the sequels would be back.
However, I’m hearing rumours now that Boyega has been approached by Kathleen Kennedy and has ‘buried the hatchet’ with Lucasfilm and will be back to help pave the way for the future of the Jedi and it has me even more excited.
The movie is set to be directed by Ms Marvel’s Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and will be written by Peaky Blinders’ Steven Knight.
Kennedy said of the new movie: “We’re 15 years out from ‘Rise of Skywalker,’ so we’re post-war, post-First Order, and the Jedi are in disarray.
“There’s a lot of discussion around, ‘Who are the Jedi? What are they doing? What’s the state of the galaxy?’ She’s attempting to rebuild the Jedi Order, based on the books, based on what she promised Luke, so that’s where we’re going.”
Now, it might just be me, but it sounds like this is potentially a new trilogy as that’s a lot of ground to cover with a potential for a bigger adventure ahead. It’s also interesting that we learned that we’re also getting a new Star Wars from writer James Mangold that chronicles where the Jedi came from… it sounds like Lucasfilm have finally a proper vision for Star Wars.
But, will the original hero, Luke Skywalker be involved? Even as his Force Ghost? I wouldn’t hold out hope: “I don’t know if we’ll spend a lot of time in flashbacks or [on] Force ghosts or things like that, but certainly, the spirit of what he represents to her is going to be significant.”
