Only a few days ago we reported that Terrifier creator/writer/director Damien Leone announced that the in-development Terrifier 4 would be the last outing for Art the Clown, but it seems he has already changed his mind on that, with two more movies likely as he fears going down the crazy road often followed by horror sequels – Hellraiser, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm St, we’re looking at you all!
At the time, Leone said of the fourth movie: “It will certainly be an epic showdown, an epic closure to this Art the Clown saga.”
The creator was quick to point out that while he would love to go proper crazy with the franchise, he knows that he needs to keep the series grounded… or as grounded as Art the Clown can be: “On one level, I would absolutely love to see him in space or go to Las Vegas or the Wild West,” Leone says, “But I can’t imagine it going past two more movies. For me, personally, as a storyteller, I think that my well is going to eventually run dry, plainly because I pack so much into each movie.
“These movies have more — I don’t like throwing the word “epic” out there — but they’re designed differently. Many people accuse these movies of having long run times with filler and stuff. I don’t think it’s a justifiable criticism. The things that you love about these movies are the things that are really adding to the runtime. It’s all these scenes with Art the Clown that are very different from the typical slashers.”
Going back to his original statement about Art having one more outing, Leone believes that, to get all the scenarios he has in his head on the screen, it’s more than likely going to be two movies, rather than one really, really long one: “I could want to make one more movie, but I have so many set pieces, kill scenes, and scenarios that I want to put Art the Clown in where I could wind up with another two-hour-and-30-minute movie. I don’t want that because I know the audience doesn’t want that, either.
“At least the majority of fans would rather have a 90-minute movie. If that’s the case, then I would probably split them up into, say, two more movies. But I truly don’t see it going on further than that.”
Ok, so at least he’s clear that there won’t be another ten movies that get lost in their own popularity and that the series has an ending in sight, an ending that he already has mapped out… more or less: “I know where the endzone is. I know what the end goal is for these characters and where Sienna and Art the Clown’s finale happens. It’s just a matter of finding out how many movies will it take me to get there.
“I don’t like setting myself in stone, saying it will be two movies or one, because you honestly never know. I mean, I could have a nightmare tonight where it changes everything, and I’m like, ‘Nope, there it is. That’s the right direction. We’re going to go that way.’ So, until it’s locked and on the screen, you never know.”
So, there’s two more Terrifier movies coming but, in all honesty, it could be more or, in fairness, it could be just one really long movie.
Whatever the outcome, if the Terrifier experience and Art the Clown do it for you, then you have more fun ahead in the coming few years…
Thoughts? Let me know them, guys…
