While many of us here at FTN liked but were pretty much disappointed with X-Men: Apocalypse, we’re pretty excited to see where the franchise goes as it tackles (for the second time) the whole Dark Phoenix saga.
And today we have some cool new images (above and below) as well as loads of details on the plot and how many of the events take place.
Director Simon Kinberg reveals it is Charles Xavier who causes Sophie Turner’s Jean Grey to become Dark Phoenix (who we saw hinted at in Apocalypse): “Pride is starting to get the better of him, and he is pushing the X-Men to more extreme missions.”
Referring to the image below that clearly shows the death of a loved character (although who remains a mystery), Xavier himself, James McAvoy says: “This is probably the most emotional X-Men we’ve done and the most pathos-driven. There’s a lot of sacrifice and a lot of suffering.”
But how does Jean become Dark Phoenix? Well, you may notice an image below of what seems to be a space shuttle? Well: “The X-Men, including Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), Cyclops (Tye Sheridan) and Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), are heroes when the film begins and sent up to save some stranded astronauts. But a solar flare hits the X-Jet and all hell breaks loose,” says Kinberg.
“Jean absorbs those solar flares and then hurls them back out into space. That’s what triggers, awakens, creates this Phoenix force and voice inside her. What appears to the world to be another heroic victory by the X-Men in saving stranded people in space we realize is the the thing that begins the unraveling of Jean and the unraveling of secrets Charles told her.”
The whole space event will throwback to the events in the original comic story that saw Jean try to absorb radiation in order to allow herself and her friends to return to earth in a space shuttle, resulting in her being replicated and ultimately replaced by a cosmic force called The Phoenix. The story goes on from there…
Finally, an interesting image reveals Jessica Chastain’s as yet unnamed villain who is an “otherwordly shapeshifter who manipulates Phoenix for her own agenda” according to Kasdan.
Could she be Lilandra. Empress of the Shi’ar empire? We’ll all know in a year from now…
X-Men: Dark Phoenix hits cinemas on November 2nd, 2018.
