It’s been a couple of years since we had anything solid on the fifth Lethal Weapon movie but it seems that it’s definitely happening and Mel Gibson will, indeed, be stepping into the directing shoes of the late Richard Donner.
Yes, it seems that as well as directing, Gibson, along with costar Danny Glover, will be returning as LA detectives Riggs and Murtaugh almost 30 years after Lethal Weapon 4, so Murtaugh really will be too old for this s#%t.
Chatting recently on Steven Oxley’s podcast, Gibson confirmed that the fifth movie is happening with him at the helm: “I’m going to direct the fifth film in the ‘Lethal Weapon’ series. You know, Richard Donner who did the other four sadly passed away and he was a good friend. He kind of tasked me with carrying the flag home on this one so it’ll be an honor for me to do that.
“He had gone a fair way with the screenplay, so we’ve used what was there and we kept poking at it. I’m pretty happy with it […] it’s funny, but it’s pretty serious too. It tackles a couple of hard issues. I’m looking forward to it.”
Look, I’m a big star of the Lethal Weapon movies but with Gibson almost 70 and Glover almost 80, it’s questionable if this can really happen at this stage but I’m hopeful and curious how the new movie will handle the advanced age of the two protagonists.
Thoughts? I wanna hear them…
