We’ve been reporting on Doctor Sleep and Haunting of Hill House’s Mike Flanagan’s proposed Clayface movie since 2021 and now, finally, it’s happening.
While not a lot is known about the project as of yet, Flanagan has said since 2021 that he wanted “to do a standalone Clayface movie as a horror/thriller/tragedy” with Clayface at the centre.
It’s been widely reported that Flanagan, who is currently developing a Dark Tower series based on Stephen King’s magnum opus as well as an Exorcist reboot, is a massive fan of the Batman: The Animated Series Clayface stories which featured the Matt Hagen incarnation of the character who is basically a human T-1000 from the Terminator movies, with the ability to change into anyone he wants as well as mould his body parts into weapons such as knives or hammers.
The project is being produced by The Batman director Matt Reeves and this led many to think it would be a more realistic take on Clayface, such as the incarnation of Basil Karlow, the first Clayface, who was a failed actor who could mimic people through his art, using it to get a way with all sorts of crimes, however, it now seems that Clayface will be part of the DCU meaning the more over-the-top version of Clayface is definitely possible.
With the movie looking to start filming next year for a 2026 release, it is at home in James Gunn’s DCU, the first phase of which is Gads and Monsters.
With the Clayface movie confirmed as being part of Gunn’s DCU by Gunn himself online, this surely means a Batman actor announcement is coming soon?
DC’s upcoming confirmed movie slate looks like this as of now:
Superman – July 11, 2025
Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow – June 26, 2026
Clayface – September 11, 2026
The Batman: Part II – October 2, 2026
Dynamic Duo – June 30, 2028
Lot of whispers saying Robert Pattinson’s Batman is set to join James Gunn’s DCU
