Still two years to go, but there seems to be progress on what Hugh Jackman is adamant will be his swansong as Wolverine.
Old Man Logan himself dropped a few hints about progress to date while promoting new movie Pan. Asked about the progress with the script, he confirmed it’s well underway. Jackman, in a rare moment of Hollywood candor, said simply, “I’ll be really honest with you, the actual script in its full form we’re up to about page 60.”
So far, about an hours’ worth of material then. Awesome. He then mentioned the much-rumoured and even-more hyped role of Patrick Stewart in the movie. Since news broke a while back that Sir Patrick himself would be appearing in the movie, there’s been a huge amount of speculation of exactly what role he would have in the movie. Jackman has allayed the fears of a glorified cameo somewhat:
“Patrick does figure in it that’s for sure. I think it’s a really important relationship but I want to see signs of that quasi-father/son sort of relationship that has not been seen before, and sides of particularly Professor X that have not been seen before. So we have some really, really cool ideas.”
So far, so good. However, it had to be hard leaving a role that defined your career and was a part of your life for the last fifteen years, right? Apparently, the best way to do that is to put in the best damn performance to date:
“I feel that I’m pushing harder than I’ve ever pushed before. I suppose the stakes just go up when you announce before your last season that this is your last season, you don’t want one game to not be your best… People ask me ‘how are you gonna be able to let it go?’ To me the only way you can let it go is if you left blood every day on the studio floor.”
Unfortunately, he’s completely ruled out playing Wolverine until the day he drops. Shame. Look, I know there’s still that corner of the internet where ‘purists’ gather to complain that certain casting decisions in superhero movies are dead wrong for spurious reasons (you know the ones I mean), and one of the main bugbears is that Hugh Jackman is too tall and too Australian to play a short, hairy Canadian. But let’s face it, he just owns the role and makes it his own. If Fox is adamant at holding on to its movie rights and not letting Marvel play with the X-Men, there’s gonna be a fairly big set of claws to fill.
The third Wolverine movie is currently slated for a 2017 release.
