Netflix are making The Hunchback of Notre Dame starring… Idris Elba. No, really

There have been many adaptations of Victor Hugo’s classic novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame, a lot of people will probably know Disney’s Oscar nominated musical animation from 1996 best, but my personal favourite version was 1989’s Hunchback Hairball of LA (AKA Big Man on Campus to US audience’s) with possibly the most spectacular named lead character (Bob MaloogaLoogaLooga LoogaLooga) this side of a Douglas Adams books.

Why, you may ask, am I bringing up the little known and little watched movie? Well, it’s looking likely we are in for another Quasimodo adaptation from Netflix with Idris Elba lined up to direct.

Elba will direct, produce and star in this “Modern Remake” of the story that is based on a screen play by Michael Mitnick. This is Elba’s second time behind the camera, his directorial debut Yardie premiered in February at the Sundance film Festival.

For those unfamiliar with the story The Hunchback of Notre Dame was published in 1831 and is cantered around Quasimodo, the physically deformed bell ringer of the Notre Dame Cathedral and his relationships with his caretaker, the Archdeacon Claude Frollo, and the beautiful gypsy Esmeralda, in 1492 Paris.
