We learned recently that the Evil Dead franchise, currently five movies and a TV series deep, was set to get a big expansion in the coming years with two more movies greenlit along with an animated movie starring the original Deadite slayer Ash Williams, played by the great Bruce Campbell.
But outside of this, we know very little about the movies. Until now.
Director of the skin-crawling Infestation Sébastien Vaniček is confirmed for one of the movies and has revealed that this will not be one of the funnier takes on the franchise ala Army of Darkness or Ash Vs Evil Dead but rather will be a white-knuckle terror ride, much like the recent Evil Dead Rise.
Bruce Campbell returning to Evil Dead in animated series as two new live-action movies confirmed
“I told the studio that I wanted to make a nasty film, a film that hurts, from which you come away tested,” said Vaniček, “I’m going to put all the horror I have inside, it will be cathartic, and if I haven’t ruined my career and I can continue to make films behind it, I will move on to something other than horror!”
Evil Dead was one of the original ‘video nasties’ back in the day but over the years it had more humourous outings but many will argue that the series works best as an unrelenting horror series… personally, I like it somewhere in the middle. That said, with Campbell stepping out of the live-action spotlight due to being too old for that nonsense these days, it would be a near-impossible task to find someone who walks the fine line between slapstick and terror so well… hopefully that’s what the animated outing will be more akin to.
Jane Levy returning to Evil Dead franchise for first time since 2013?
Anyways, we have no more details barring the promise of utter horror… whatever comes, I know I will be seated there on opening night.
Thoughts?
