We reported last month [below] that the Monsterverse – which recently celebrated its tenth anniversary – is set for more adventures on the big and small screens after the success of both Godzilla X Kong on the big screen and Monarch: Legacy of Monsters on the small and tonight we have big updates on both.
So, big screen first.
Dave Callaham, screenwriter on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, has been hired to write the next movie set in the world ruled by Godzilla and King Kong and while it’s not been confirmed yet, it’s likely that Adam Wingard, director of the last two installments, is likely to returned as both he and Lionsgate have expressed interest in him continuing the story although, one possible snag is his movie Onslaught, which he is expected to begin work on in the coming months.
While Callaham is best known for his Marvel entry, he did get a story credit on Gareth Edwards’ 2014 Godzilla, the movie that kick-started the whole thing oh, and he also wrote the third, as yet to be released, Spider-verse movie.
On top of this, it looks like we’ll have a much bigger second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
Co-creator of the Apple+ series, Chris Black, has said that having a cameo of Kong at the end of season one, will go further but the human cast will still be central to the story: “I think where we left the season gave us so much fertile territory for storytelling. Keiko comes back, we appear to have lost Colonel Shaw, we have this reunion with the family… that feels like a great launch pad for season 2. We want to continue to tell this human story, we want to continue to tell the story of the Randa family and Kate and Kentaro and their father Hiroshi and now their grandmother Keiko.
Monsterverse set for more Kaiju adventures on both big and small screens
“But there also is a hunger for more spectacle, for more monsters. How do we make it bigger and better? We reveal Kong at the end of the first season so there’s gonna be an expectation you’re gonna see more of Kong that we want to deliver on.”
His comment on Colonel Shaw has raised my curiosity as he says ‘we appear to have lost’ him; Shaw’s older self was played by the legend that is Kurt Russell in the first season and he was easily the best thing in it, so the chance of having him back is one that is eagerly welcomed by we Monsterverse fans.
All this is awesome news, but I’m still sitting here waiting on an update on season two of Netflix’s cracking little Kong: Skull Island animated series… if we get an update on that, then it’s all good in the monsterhood.
Thoughts? I wanna hear them, monster fans…
