With Legendary Pictures setting up Godzilla and and King Kong to meets onscreen in the next few years – well, in Godzilla vs. Kong in 2020 – we had previously speculated that surely the other Legendary property, Pacific Rim, was a natural fit (here).
But now it seems that it may, just may, be something that could be on the horizon.
With Pacific Rim: Uprising set for release next March (trailer below), Director Steven S DeKnight has revealed that, should it be a success, then there’s more plans for the franchise, including meeting Godzilla and/or Kong: “I won’t say there’s an Easter Egg [in Uprising] but there’s been a lot of discussion about that possibility [of crossing over],” he says.
He continues that a third Pacific Rim is planned, should the second do well enough for it to happen, and that that could lead to the crossover: “Look I think it would be fantastic to have the ‘Pacific Rim’ universe join Legendary’s Monster Universe, it seems like a natural step. And part of the big overall plan after the third movie we’ve talked about is that could happen, it’s always a possibility. It’s by far not a certainty; it’s merely theoretical at this point, but as a fan myself I would love to see that happen.”
So there has been talks at Legendary for the merging of the three franchises? That’s pretty exciting news.
But what of the third instalment in the Pacific Rim series?
“The tricky thing with something like this is you want to not end on a cliffhanger,” DeKnight says, “You don’t want an ‘Empire Strikes Back’ cliffhanger unless you know you’re gonna do a third movie — you want to leave it open but also wrap it up. So that’s very much what we did on this movie. It has a definitive ending but very much open to the next chapter.”
Pacific Rim: Uprising arrives in March 2018, while Godzilla: King of the Monsters attacks in May 2019 and Godzilla vs. Kong will see the two monsters finally meet in 2020. Will we see Pacific Rim 3 in there soon? Here’s hoping…
