Philippa Boyens talks the future of Lord of the Rings on the big screen and it sounds great

We learned earlier this year that Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings saga is set to continue and that kicks off with The Lord Of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim animated movie next month.

But that’s just the beginning.

Now screenwriter Philippa Boyens has been talking about the future of the franchise which will have Andy Serkis’ The Hunt For Gollum as its next big-screen, live-action entry.

Peter Jackson and Andy Serkis discuss returning to Middle Earth for Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum

Firstly, she puts to bed a rumour that has been making the rounds about the movie, stating: “I can tell you definitively it isn’t two films.

“That was a genuine misunderstanding that happened because we’ve begun to work, conceptually, on two different live-action films. The first being The Hunt For Gollum, the second one still to be confirmed.”

Wait… two movies? We’ll get back to that in a second.

“It’s [The Hunt for Gollum] quite an intense story,” she goes on, “which falls after the birthday party of Bilbo and before the Mines Of Moria.

“It’s a specific chunk of incredible untold story, told through the perspective of this incredible creature.”

Ok, but why did the rumour that The Hunt for Gollum come about? Well, it seems it was due to a misunderstanding by Gandlaf star Ian McKellan, who is expected to return if his age and health allow: “We’re playing around with a number of ideas, but most of those ideas do include Gandalf,” Boyens explains. “So Gandalf would potentially return for two live-action films.”

Ah, that makes sense and more McKellan/Gandalf is always welcome.

As for the new animated outing, The War of the Rohirrim, Boyens says that, should it perform well with fans anf the box office, there’s more animation potentially coming.

“We have an absolute banger of a second film that would just be incredible as an anime,” she says, “But let’s see if there’s an appetite for it.”

I’m not the biggest Lord of the Rings fan, I must admit but I can appreciate the world that Jackson and Boyens built from the book of Tolkien and I have many friends who adore this series, so I’m excited for them all, especially the fans, and I will be seated for The War of the Rohirrim on opening night, December 13th, excited to see what comes next.

Thoughts? I know you have them.
