Oh, Blade Runner 2049, what a curious beast you are… loved by critics and fans (including us) alike, the movie did the almost unimaginable and matched the original in many ways, evolving the story in an exciting and satisfying way.
But, sadly, it severely under performed at the box office… although the home release, like the first movie, may tell a different story.
However, Ridley Scott, director for the original movie and secret co-writer on 2049 (“Most of that script’s mine. I sit with writers for an inordinate amount of time and I will not take credit, because it means I’ve got to sit there with a tape recorder while we talk. I can’t do that to a good writer. But I have to, because to prove I’m part of the actual process, I have to then have an endless amount [of proof], and I can’t be bothered.”) has been asked if he would like to see a third instalment and it seems he already has an idea and plan for where the franchise goes next: “I hope so. I think there is another story. I’ve got another one ready to evolve and be developed, so there is certainly one to be done for sure.”
Sadly, we know that money talks and it talks no louder anywhere else than in Hollywood, so the chances of a third instalment are very unlikely at this stage.
But man, as fans, we’d love to see where it goes next.
