Oooooh… now wouldn’t this be a thing?
It seems that Disney, understandably worried about the mixed reactions to The Last Jedi and the box office bombing of – in our opinion a much better Star Wars outing – Solo: A Star Wars Story, are prepared to do something that until right now I would have thought impossible and outright unthinkable.
Rumour is they are planning on bringing in George Lucas – creator of Star Wars and director of Episodes I, II, III and IV as well as the showrunner/writer of The Clone Wars – in to help draw to a close the main Star Wars arc with Episode IX, working with writer/director JJ Abrams.
Of course, this leaves a peculiar taste because, let’s not beat around the bush here, the prequels left a bad taste in many folks’ mouths. But, on the flip side, as much as we like The Force Awakens, Rogue One and Solo, we can’t help feeling that Uncle George’s lack of presence is disturbing in the new era of Star Wars.
Look, we love Rey, Finn and Poe but the story is that of the Skywalkers – Luke, Leia and, by default, Han Solo – and therefore no-one is better qualified to decide how this all ends than Lucas himself.
He started the story and we feel he should finish it.
After Episode IX go ahead in whatever direction you want, but give the characters we know and love a proper send-off. A just and good ending.
The recent news (here) that Mark Hamill will be returning as Luke Skywalker for the trilogy closer along with Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian – last seen in Return of the Jedi in 1984 – along with confirmation that the late Carrie Fisher will be appearing via footage she recorded during the filming of The Last Jedi, means that Disney may well be trying to pull the band back together again – in fact, we wouldn’t rule out Harrison Ford’s involvement in someway too: a holo-message perhaps? A flashback? it wouldn’t surprise us at all if they tried to get everyone involved for one last hurrah.
So, while it’s just a rumour for now, something about this rings true for us.
George Lucas closing the Skywalker Saga forever. Doesn’t that just feel… right?
Let us know your thoughts as always, gang.
